What features are available through LightSail?

At LightSail we combine adaptive learning and digital libraries to make literacy programs more effective.

Here are the basic features that help schools and teachers offer truly differentiated literacy programs filled with students love to read.

General Features

  • Available for use in iOS, Android  and Chrome devices
  • Provides access to nearly a thousand titles, including classic literature, non-fiction content provided by ReadWorks, and short form texts created by LightSail
  • Provides personalized reading recommendations to students based on their Lexile scores


  • Is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and the Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool (IMET)
  • Includes Cloze, multiple choice, and short written response)assessment items are embedded in the text
    • Cloze assessment items are generated by MetaMetrics
    • Multiple choice and cloze items are automatically scored by the system
    • Short written response items are accompanied with scoring rubrics and are built to allow for blind grading by teachers


  • Contains English and Spanish language content
  • Provides access to nonfiction and fiction texts, including
    • articles from a daily periodical for up to date current event content
    • hi-lo texts
    • science, math, social studies/ history, and economics content
    • content in different cultural interest areas (i.e. African-American, Asian-American, Native American, Latino American interests)
    • award winning titles, including winners of the Hugo Awards, the John Newbery Medal, the Man Booker Prize and others

Instructional Tools

  • Annotation tool that allows students to record notes on the text they are reading, and align the notes to a particular standard
  • Collaborative dialogue tools where students and teachers can comment on and discuss the titles they are reading
  • Motivational badges that reward students for reading achievements like completing text in a new genre or earning an Above Standard score on a written-response assessment
  • Text-embedded dictionary with controlled vocabulary, audio and pictorial support and Spanish/Mandarin translations to support English Language Learners


  • Provides easy to read performance reports for both students and teachers that display statistics on  time spent reading, number of pages read, Lexile growth, and scores per type of assessment

  • Provides access to an online learning community with classroom videos, tutorials, lesson plans and other resources
