LightSail partnering with innovative literacy publisher Gemma Open Door

LightSail Education expands reading mission to serve mature students, partnering with innovative literacy publisher Gemma Open Door

In an effort to support literacy across the lifespan, LightSail has partnered with Gemma Open Door, a not-for-profit organization devoted to adult and young adult English language literacy.

Gemma’s original, unabridged works by bestselling and distinguished authors explore sophisticated topics at simple reading levels. Relevance is the key to success in adult education, and Gemma’s stories profile situations and issues that adults and young adults can readily recognize. Since shame is a profound aspect of illiteracy, using children’s books to teach adults reduces self-esteem and stands in the way of progress. Gemma and LightSail now offer high-interest, low reading level content that reinforces mastery and confidence. Nearly 60,000 copies of Gemma Open Door books have made their way into libraries, schools, and community literacy programs.

Literacy skills are integral to personal health, financial well-being, and equity. More than 36 million adults and young adults across the US cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third-grade level. That number approaches 800 million—2/3 of whom are women—worldwide. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that 43% of low-literacy adults in the US live in poverty. Children whose parents have low literacy levels are 72% more likely to have low reading levels themselves. (NBER). 1 in 6 young adults (over 1.2 million) drop out of high school every year, and more than 29.5 million adults between the ages of 18 and 64 do not have a high school diploma.

“Literacy is a family matter. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing homeschooling and isolation, digital access to reading instruction for children AND adults is essential. By adding Gemma’s sophisticated content for older students, LightSail is able to enhance its support of reading across the full spectrum of age groups,” said Steven Gittleson, CEO and co-founder of LightSail.

LightSail is aligned to our mission of empowering emerging and reluctant readers throughout the lifespan,” said Trish O’Hare, Gemma’s Executive Director. “Given LightSail’s international reach and powerful patented educational e-reading platform, we are excited to see Gemma Open Doors enriching the lives of literacy learners of all ages in the United States and far beyond.”
