Students in the 10th grade are starting to reach the ceiling in regards to their literacy growth in school, but educators can still provide reading help that will improve their readiness for college.
In the early years of their school careers, students are often focused on high Lexile growth, however, in the subsequent years, it is important that they continue their positive reading habits and achieve maximum growth prior to the end of their final year in high school.
Typically, a Grade 10 student will have a Lexile score of between 905L and 1195L. At this stage, their yearly and weekly growth has slowed down considerably.
While young students can achieve growth of over 100L per year, a student in the 10th grade will generally improve by just 17L over the course of the year. Educators here should be aiming to assist a student in achieving around 0.3L growth on a weekly basis.
Still Time to Improve Literacy Skills
It is difficult to instill new reading habits at this stage of learning, but introducing students to the right platform could provide them with motivation to improve.
Grade 10 students should be reviewing books that have been leveled between 1080L and 1335L as long as it corresponds with their current Lexile scores. Using cloze assessments to determine an accurate Lexile level, educators can then provide reading material that offers enough of a challenge to stimulate growth.
