Reading Help for 12th Grade Students

In their final year of high school, students should now be prepared for post-secondary level reading, and if they were introduced to the Lexile system, their reading level will have already been established. Historically, very little Lexile growth takes place during Grade 12, but students can still benefit from the system as they develop positive reading habits for the future.

It will be difficult for educators to make drastic changes to a senior student’s literacy skills at this stage of their school career, but it is important to at least maintain their reading ability so that they leave for college on a positive note. Students in the 12th grade should be at a Lexile level of between 940L and 1210L. Studies have shown that from Grade 10 on, students will only typically grow by 17L over the course of a year, with only 0.3L growth per week.

Match Student with the Correct Reading Material

One area that educators can motivate students is by pairing them with the correct reading material. In the 12th grade, students should be reading books that have been leveled between 1185L and 1385L in terms of text difficulty. Another helpful tip for students would be to continue reading 30 minutes every day to maintain and improve upon current reading skills.

It is also important not to dismiss cloze assessments. These tests allow educators and parents to continuously track their Lexile growth.t remains important that questions are not brushed over or ignored as this could lead to lowered Lexile scores.

To assist in maintaining these good habits, consider introducing students to the correct reading platform. LightSail Education is a comprehensive LexileⓇ and standards-aligned literacy platform and digital e-book library. Featuring books from leading publishers, LightSail holistically assesses and nurtures each student on their K-12 literacy journey.

Along with a wide range of free books in the e-book library, students can also find popular paid titles such as the Divergent series and The Maze Runner series.
