Lexile Levels for 8th Grade Students

Assessing students in the 8th grade with Lexile will provide educators with a strong indication as to which students will be better prepared for college-level reading and those who will need more assistance before they reach the end of their school career.

Firstly, an accurate Lexile level for each student needs to be determined. This can be achieved by monitoring their cloze assessments. It cannot be understated how important it is for students to take these tests seriously. Questions need to be read carefully and understood before answers are provided. Failure to do this could result in lower scores and also be responsible for Lexile dips over time.

Typically, national studies have shown that students in this grade will score between 805L and 1100L over the course of the year. Lexile growth of around 52L should be expected over the 8th-grade year, and on average students will improve by 1L per week. Literacy growth can be aided by ensuring that students are reading on a daily basis.

Choose Reading Material Based Off of Lexile Level

To achieve optimal performance, educators need to pair students with the ideal reading material. Accurate Lexile scores will allow for students to find books that are an adequate challenge without being too difficult. Reading text that far exceeds their Lexile scores can lead to a loss of interest in reading and this is where poor reading habits will fall into place.

Selecting the right platform can ease stress for parents and educators as it will take on the role of tracking performance when students are outside of the classroom.
