Young Readers Across the Country Rise to the LightSail Launch Challenge

Schools participating in the digital reading contest are eligible to receive up to $3,000 worth of premier digital books.

(NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 27, 2017) –  LightSail Education today announced the LightSail Launch Challenge, a national online reading competition taking take place in classrooms across the country from October 2, 2017 – October 31, 2017.

LightSail is the leading education technology platform dedicated to turning students everywhere into readers. Students access a library of fiction and nonfiction content appropriate for their individual reading abilities from a range of devices including Google Chromebooks and Apple iPads.

Designed to encourage students to read more during the school day and at home, the LightSail Launch Challenge provides teachers with a fun and engaging platform that can help motivate all of their students to participate. Kids reading on the LightSail platform earn badges for achieving certain reading goals, and classrooms track their position in the friendly competition.

Last winter, during LightSail’s inaugural reading event, The LightSail 25, schools reported that students read an impressive 20 hours, on average, during the four weeks.

“LightSail has served as a catalyst to ignite a love for reading across the grades,” says Newark Public Schools principal Maria Merlo. “Last winter, during the LightSail 25 Challenge, our students achieved even greater heights by not only reading during their Independent Reading period in class, but also at home. By developing these types of good habits, we are confident that our students will become lifelong readers.”

Winners of the LightSail Launch Challenge

At the conclusion of the challenge on October 31, the top three schools with the highest number of overall minutes read will be awarded $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 worth of premier e-book titles to add to their existing LightSail libraries.
