El 12 de diciembre de 1584, Cervantes contrajo matrimonio con Catalina de Salazar y Palacios en el pueblo toledano de Esquivias. Catalina era una joven que aún no había cumplido veinte años y que aportó una pequeña dote. Tras dos años de matrimonio, Cervantes se separó y comenzó sus extensos viajes por Andalucía sin haber tenido hijos.
