Noble but impoverished D’Artagnan dreams of joining the Musketeers, the king’s personal guard. En route to Paris, he is robbed of his letter of introduction, and so, with the help of his three Musketeer companions—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, sets out to make a name for himself.
The highly fictionalized character of d’Artagnan was inspired by Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan, who served as the captain of the Musketeers of the Guard in the late seventeenth century. Author Alexandre Dumas also wrote two sequels to the wildly popular The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne. The Three Musketeers has been adapted numerous times for stage, television, and film, including a 2011 film starring Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich.
