Synopsis: Los escritos iniciales de Miguel de Cervantes datan de los tiempos de reclusión en Argel. A su regreso a España, entre 1582 y 1587, escribió sus primeras obras teatrales. Solo se conservan dos: El cerco de Numancia y El trato de Argel. Tras estos textos, en la tradición clásica y el teatro humanista, durante cierto tiempo dejó de escribir para la escena. Solo al final de su vida publicó Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses nuevos, nunca representados (1615). Tres de esas comedias muestran su imagen del mundo islámico y su vida en Argelia: El gallardo español, Los baños de Argel y La gran sultana. Cabe añadir que el Trato de Argel fue imitada por Lope de Vega en Los cautivos de Argel.
