Students in the 10th grade are fast approaching the end of their possible Lexile growth in their school careers. Because of this, educators should be encouraging good reading habits to keep them on track to reach a college reading level by the end of the 12th grade.
The typical 10th grader will only improve their scores by around 17L at this point, with weekly growth of 0.3L expected. When looking at data from a national sample of students, you should expect the average student to score between 905L and 1195L in the 10th grade.
Calculating correct Lexile scores can be accomplished using cloze assessments to determine correct comprehension, however, emphasis needs to be put on completing these tests accurately. Failure to properly understand and answer questions can provide an inaccurate indication of their literacy level which is a common cause for Lexile dips.
Find Reading Material at the Students’ Level
Once the correct Lexile level is determined, educators and parents can begin to align students with the right reading materials. This is essential in maximizing growth over the course of the year, as reading material should be stimulating and challenging. Books that are leveled too low will have little impact on their literacy improvement, while reading material that far exceeds Lexile scores can discourage readers from putting in valuable reading time.
