Lexile Levels for 7th Grade Students

Staying on top of Lexile performance through primary grades, middle school, and high school will be essential in preparing students for post-secondary education. 7th-grade students are quickly approaching the latter years of their school career. Lexile growth at this point is beginning to slow rapidly, and students with poor reading habits could see their Lexile scores begin to dwindle.

In the 7th grade, studies using a national sample of students have shown that typically readers will score at a Lexile level between 735L and 1065L over the course of the year. Growth of around 69L is generally achievable for 7th graders should students be progressing at around 1.3L per week.

To determine the correct Lexile level, educators should ensure that their students complete cloze assessments appropriately. This can be done by putting emphasis on reading questions properly and taking their time to answer accurately.

Tracking reading performance is done through the cloze assessments, and the best way to ensure constant progress is by monitoring that students are reading on a daily basis. Regular reading may be significant, but reading the right material is just as important.

Determine Lexile Level to Provide the Appropriate Reading Material

This is why knowing a student’s correct Lexile level is essential, as it will allow educators to provide books and other reading material that will offer a challenge but not overwhelm the reader. Pushing students to read far above their Lexile level can result in a loss of interest in reading and could derail their literacy growth in general.

The right reading platform can make all the difference and ensure that reading performance is being tracked even when children are not in the classroom.
