Lexile Levels for 11th Grade Students

Literacy development for 11th-grade students should already be at an advanced stage, with little room for dramatic growth at this stage of their school career. In turn, students should be well versed with the Lexile system and have a good understanding of what their current Lexile level is.

Based on data acquired from studies using a national sample of students using Lexile, the average 11th grader should achieve between 940L and 1210L. This would mean that they are on track for reading at a college level, and very little growth would be expected in terms of annual and weekly Lexile growth.

Although dramatic growth may not be possible for most, educators should still be encouraging the good reading habits that were developed in prior grades. Cloze assessments should continue to be done to ensure that students maintain their Lexile levels and understand the material. A high level of importance should be placed on these tests, as failure to pay close attention to the questions could lead to Lexile scores dipping.

Regular reading should also still be encouraged, and although students in this grade will likely be engaging in more social and other activities, introducing the right platform can assist in motivating readers and tracking progress even when they are not in the classroom.

The right platform will provide reading material that is best suited to each student’s Lexile level. This remains essential, as books that are challenging will continue to help them develop literacy skills and reading comprehension. Students will have developed their own interests at this stage, so some flexibility is welcome, but readers should still be provided books that are not well below their Lexile levels or far above.
