Lexile Levels for 12th Grade Students

The 12th grade is the final stop for students in their high school career, and their Lexile scores should now be at a level where they would be ready to move onto college. For the most part, educators and parents will have completed their task in achieving maximum Lexile growth and should now be focused on maintaining those levels.

When looking at studies using a national sample of students, you will notice that Lexile scores don’t change from the 11th grade, with students expected to score between 940L and 1210L in the 12th grade. Annual and weekly growth is also low, with Grade 10 having been the last year for significant movement.

There are some vital tasks that can assist in maintaining Lexile levels and allow for some growth. Cloze assessments should continue to be done and educators should still motivate students to take these tests seriously. Failing to understand and answer questions correctly could lead to a dip in Lexile scores.

Choose Correctly Leveled Reading Material

The right reading material will also play an important role in continuing to challenge the reader. Typically, 12th graders can handle books that have been leveled between 1070L and 1220L. However, each individual student will have different reading needs. Ideally, students should not be taking on books that are graded far higher than their current Lexile scores. This can be overwhelming and often lead to a loss of interest in reading. Instead, books should offer enough of a challenge to stimulate them while also aiding literacy growth and improved reading comprehension.
