Lexile Level for 2nd Grade Students

When setting out a reading plan for individual students in the 2nd grade, it is important to determine an accurate Lexile level before the right reading schedule can be provided. Children in this grade are still ready to achieve incredible Lexile growth over the course of the year, which is why regular assessments should be done to ensure that each reader remains on track to achieve their desired goal.

Readers in the second grade would typically achieve a reading level between 140L and 500L in terms of Lexile scores and could achieve well over 100L growth over the course of the year with the proper research-based reading strategies and activities. Managing Lexile levels will come down to ensuring that children are both reading regularly and completing their cloze assessments to determine their comprehension of the material.

There Are Simple Ways to Improve Reading Skills

Reading on a daily basis is one of the best ways for a child to fast-track improvement in terms of literacy skills and reading comprehension. Ideally, each child should be reading for 30 minutes or more over the course of a day. Simply reading more often, especially at this age, is a research-based strategy that will improve literacy skills.

Regular cloze assessments should be done, and by teaching readers to pay close attention to the questions, you will be able to determine a more accurate Lexile level. Too often, students do not take the comprehension questions seriously, so educators must stress the importance of this aspect of Lexile. Typically, their weekly performance is tracked using colors that indicate whether they are performing at the expected level, dropping behind, or progressing much more quickly.

Monitor the Lexile Scores Carefully

The reason accurate Lexile scores are important is because this will allow tutors to identify the correct reading material for each individual student without any guesswork. Typically, books read by 2nd grade students should have a text difficulty of between 420L and 650L. Knowing their Lexile score will help to select books that are challenging but not overwhelming.
