First grade is a big year for your homeschooler. At this age, your child is a full-fledged elementary student.
Every first grader deserves a school year that’s packed with great books. Here are five selections that should be part of your 1st grade homeschool curriculum.
The rhyming patterns in the text help your reader to predict words even though they might not be able to read them without sounding them out. Rhyming words are a great way to build reading confidence in early readers. Plus, the hilarious pictures make great context clues, and storyline will keep kids coming back to this book again and again.
1. Easy Reader: Put Me in the Zoo
Your first-grade student is growing her reading abilities. She’ll benefit from easy readers that are designed to build up a child’s literacy skills. Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire is a classic that’s been beloved by families for years.
2. Beginning Chapter Book: Missing Monkey!
First graders commonly have Lexile levels between 190 and 530. Some students may be ready for introductory chapter books with short chapters, large print, and pictures. Check out Missing Monkey! from the Good Crooks series by Mary Amato. With a Lexile level of 510, it may be just right for your budding reader. (Included with your LightSail subscription)
3. Read-aloud: Just So Stories
Even though first graders are stretching their reading muscles, they’ll still enjoy read-alouds with you. Reading aloud is a smart way to introduce your first grader to titles that he’s not yet ready to tackle on his own. The animals in Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories stories and quirky reasoning will keep kids entertained and asking questions, a great way to begin narration with younger children. Many kids enjoy acting out these stories with their siblings or stuffed animals, which is a unique way to narrate as well.
4. Poetry Introduction: “Paul Revere’s Ride”
First graders aren’t too young to start appreciating poetry. A great place to begin memory work is with poetry, and who doesn’t love the midnight ride of Paul Revere? Introduce Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Paul Revere’s Ride to students and work on memorizing it with the cadence, even pretending to ride along with Paul! It is also a great way to include a bit of history with your literature study!
