Faith-based Fiction for Your Christian Homeschool

Homeschool families know that one of the best ways to experience what the world was like many years ago is to read about it in fictional stories. For Christian parents, it’s even better if those stories have a faith-based element to them. To get you started, check out these four Christian historical fiction books.

1. Herodias

Your students can travel back to Bible times with Herodias by Gustave Flaubert. This is a fictional tale based on the life and death of John the Baptist and the royal family responsible for his death. In addition to being captivated by the storyline, your students will also become better acquainted with the social and political groups of that time.

2. Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ

Among Christian historical fiction, Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace is one of the foremost works. The story of Judah Ben-Hur takes place during the time when Jesus walked the Earth. Judah experiences serious trials in his own life, and he also is present when Jesus is crucified.
As the story progresses, Judah becomes a follower of Jesus and chooses to honor God with his life and money.

3. Daisy

For those interested in more recent Christian historical fiction novels, check out Daisy by Susan Warner. This story is set in the American South during the years before the Civil War. The protagonist must grapple with the moral issue of slavery in light of her Christian faith. Reading this piece of Christian historical fiction could lead to stimulating conversations in your family about morality and convictions.

4. Pollyanna

For a glimpse at life a little over a century ago, turn to Pollyanna by Eleanor Porter. It’s the story of an optimistic young girl who brightens others’ lives but then faces her own terrible tragedy.
While this book has been enjoyed by people of various religious backgrounds, you’ll find that it’s laced with Christian themes. Pollyanna’s ability to see the glad in all circumstances comes from her father, a minister, and his belief in the Bible.
