Seventh grade finds your homeschooler well entrenched in the middle school years. This is an exciting time when children increase their independent reading and study skills. It is also a time when children use their foundation of reading comprehension to begin engaging in critical thinking. Therefore, you may enjoy more lively discussions of subject matter with your child. These four book suggestions make great additions to your homeschool curriculum for this stage of learning.
1. David Crockett: His Life and Adventures
Seventh grade is an excellent time to include the early modern time period in a homeschool history curriculum. In this book, the American frontier comes to life through the challenges, struggles, and adventures of the legendary Davy Crockett. Author John S. C. Abbott draws from Crockett’s autobiography to paint a picture of hardscrabble pioneer life in the early 1800s that will draw your child into the action.
2. Around the World in Eighty Days
This classic tale, set in 1872, tells the story of the wealthy, exacting, eccentric Phileas Fogg, who spends his days alone—and likes it that way. Fogg sets out to see if he can circle the globe in 80 days to win a bet. Along the way, Fogg faces many obstacles and experiences great adventures. With its reference to the exciting places Fogg explores, this Jules Verne book makes a great addition to seventh-grade literature choices.
3. David Copperfield
Set in Victorian England, this book tells the story of a young boy, orphaned at age nine. Through this classic Charles Dickens tale, students understand the difficulties and harsh realities of life for many during this time. Furthermore, readers confront questions regarding poverty, wealth, class, and inequality.
4. Weather and Climate through Infographics
This engaging Lerner Publications book on weather and climate beautifully supplements a seventh-grade life sciences curriculum. Colorful infographics present the layers of the earth’s atmosphere, the water cycle, ocean currents, air masses, and other topics, making the information easy to understand.
Seventh grade is an excellent time to engage in reading discussions with your child. The LightSail chat feature enables you to interact with your homeschooler while reading—even if you cannot read together. Furthermore, LightSail’s World Book Encyclopedia articles offer a wealth of supplemental information, right in the LightSail platform.
