How to Incorporate the Bible Into Your History Curriculum

Did you know that the Bible can be an excellent tool for teaching history? It’s true! There are many notable events in the Bible from which you can create whole unit studies. This short list of ideas will help you make a fantastic Bible history for homeschool.

The Life of Jesus Christ

Many Bible passages center around the life of Jesus, but you can find the most concise information in the Gospels. These books of the Bible give readers an accurate account of what Jesus did. To supplement your Bible reading, I suggest looking at the “Life events of Jesus Christ” map that comes with our World Book Subscription. This fun map shows where Jesus’ miracles, teachings, and other significant events took place.

Communion

Another way to initiate Bible history for homeschool is to explore ancient Christian practices, such as communion. Look in the Bible for the story of the Last Supper. Then, learn more about communion by reading the article “Communion” from World Book. The Bible story gives the actual event, while the encyclopedia article helps students learn how we still practice communion today.

Joseph

The story of Joseph is one of family and forgiveness. Joseph was a classic underdog who came out on top, and he was kind to others in the process. After you read Joseph’s story to your little one, share the story of Joseph the Dreamer with them. This book is unique in that the main character is played by a rabbit. The illustrations are bright and will catch any reader’s eye! While not historically accurate, it does solidify the character traits Joseph possessed. All in all, this book is a fun read that will spark discussion.

The Apocalypse or End Times

End times theology has been a hot topic for centuries. After your student reads the book of Revelation, have them dive deep into the book by using a commentary. A commentary provides more context and can promote a greater understanding of an often confusing book of the Bible. The Revelation Explained: An Exposition, Text by Text, of the Apocalypse of St. John is a commentary that’s stood the test of time. Young readers will love the verse-by-verse explanations.

The Bible can easily become your primary source of history when you have a number of supplemental resources available. LightSail has an extensive library of over 12,000 titles, audiobooks, videos, World Book encyclopedia articles, and more to help you craft the best curriculum ever.
