Must-Have Books for a Classical Christian History Program

Great books bring historical events to life while portraying the beauty, goodness, and truth that have been present throughout the twists and turns of history. Parents who teach historical events through the lens of a Biblical worldview seek books that display God’s goodness and mercy throughout time, despite the actions of humankind. The following four books are excellent choices for a Christian homeschool history program.

Famous Men of Rome by John Haaren and A.B. Poland

Famous Men of Rome covers the history of ancient Rome. The stories begin with the founding of Rome, cover the monarchy, republic, and empire stages of the region, and conclude with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The biographies contained in this book include men such as Romulus, Julius Caesar, Cicero, Augustus, Nero, Titus, Marcus Aurelius, and Constantine the Great. The audiobook version is included in the LightSail for Homeschoolers library so the whole family can listen and learn together.

Famous Men of Greece by John Haaren and A.B. Poland

Famous Men of Greece opens with the founding of Greece and continues through the Golden Age and on to the empire’s fall. In this book, available on audiobook through the LightSail for Homeschoolers platform, your children will explore Greek history through the stories of 32 men, including Cadmus, Hercules, Jason, Socrates, Alexander the Great, Aristotle, and Ptolemy.

Famous Men of the Middle Ages by John Haaren and A.B. Poland

Your children can experience the Middle Ages world through the biographies of men such as Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Edward the Black Prince, Marco Polo, and William Tell. Not to be left out, Joan of Arc also makes an appearance in this book. Appropriate for 5th through 8th graders, this book can be assigned to your students for independent reading or enjoyed together as a family read-aloud.

Famous Men of Modern Times by John Henry Haaren and A.B. Poland

Famous Men of Modern Times covers history from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 through the late 1800s. Your children can sail the seas as explorers like Vasco da Gama and Sir Walter Raleigh seek new trade routes and uncharted lands. Within the pages of this book, Galileo makes his contributions to science, William Pitt leads Britain during the Seven Years’ War, and George Washington becomes the president of a brand-new nation.

Discerning parents can find wonderful resources for presenting history to their children while maintaining a Biblical worldview. In addition to thousands of excellent books, LightSail for Homeschoolers includes book collections to support the classical learner in history, geography, and literature in the grammar, logic, and rhetoric stages of education.
